Work Much?
Alright. So it’s’ summer and this is usually the slower time of the year across the board for Deloitte offices isn’t it?
Not in Winnipeg it isn’t! We are scheduled to kick off our Reno on July 29th and things are, how you say, a tad hectic @ 360 Main Street these days……..
When you’re going a million miles a minute trying to work and pack and work and move and work work work, and family and work, it’s not always easy to pull off a “fresh as a daisy” vibe, is it? I’ve got a few tips and time savers to help all y’all pull yourselves together, even on days when all you want to do is pound on the snooze button, roll over, and stay in bed!
Instead of showering in the morning, try taking that shower at night. It’ll buy you at least 20 minutes in the morning. Worried about unkempt tresses? Work some mousse into your hair after washing it and refresh it in the morning with a couple of spritzes of water. Shazam! Hair = done.
Bags under your eyes from super long work days and too little sleep? Placing cucumber slices or previously steeped tea bags on the orbital socket for 5-10 minutes really DOES do wonders for those unsightly purple-blue smudges. Easiest remedy of all, concealer. Buy some. Use it!! Oh, and maybe try to get some sleep as well.
Splurge on a couple of non-iron dress shirts. Or, pick out your outfit the night before and do your ironing while you wind down your evening. Or, try to charm a family member into taking these tedious chores off of your hands. (good luck!)
Make sure you eat properly. It’s really easy to indulge in fast food and quickie microwave meals when we are pressed for time, but your body will pay a price for fat laden sugar filled carbs and you will feel sluggish the day after ingesting less than desirable menu items! Fresh fruit and veggies work double duty as they are super good for you and assist in hydrating your body.
Vitamin up! If you are not already, start taking a multi vitamin, or whatever vitamin suits your lifestyle. You really should notice a difference in how you feel in just a few days. When in doubt, have a chat with your local pharmacist for guidance.
And, when all else fails, Caffeine is the answer ladies and gentlemen! It’s no coincidence that a Starbucks AND a Tim Horton’s are located in the concourse at 360 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB. Not to mention the multiple hot beverage dispensers strategically located throughout the office.
Coffee seems to be the preferred method of boosting energy levels, but if you go this route, it is recommended that the ingestion cycle be repeated every 90 minutes or so to keep the caffeine rush in effect and to avoid a disastrous caffeine crash. And pair that coffee up with water, caffeine is known to dehydrate a body, so it is important to replenish with plenty of water. Room temperature H2O is more readily absorbed and is easier to retain than ice cold water.
Dishing with Auntie DMS ~ What to wear, what to wear!!
Hullo my darling sweeties! Auntie DMS is back after a brief hiatus from the newsletter world! And, ready to chat your ears off regarding a “hot topic” in and around the office!
Dress code may be something of an unwritten rule in your location, and of course, easier to adhere to in the winter months if I’m not mistaken. However, in the summer months we all may have a bit of a tougher time choosing an office appropriate ensemble, yes? With temperatures and humidexes skyrocketing off the charts outside and air conditioning blasting away inside, what is a DMS’er to do? Indeed.
Auntie DMS highly suggests that if you are dressed for the beach, you are NOT dressed for Deloitte. In our highly professional environment, it is possible to beat the heat and humidity while remaining fresh as a daisy and office appropriate. Layers may be the key ingredient to pulling your look together. Perhaps the purchase of a light weight, classically elegant sweater type garment over a tank is in order. It will keep you covered up while conveying a professional image. And, at the end of the day when it is time to face the great outdoors, one simply removes the outer layer and is instantly prepared for the abrupt climate change.
While we must all use our discretion on what is acceptable in the office, Auntie is happy to provide a list of absolute DO NOT’s for her readers:
• Flip flops
• Bathing suits
• Shorts
• Tank Tops (Put that lightweight sweater Auntie suggested over a tank for a polished appearance!)
• Funny or logo shirts
• Spaghetti strapped anything
• Anything see-through
Basically it is up to all of us as individuals to become familiar with the fashion sense of our respective offices, but when in doubt, ask!
Enjoy your upcoming heat waves my angels and please feel free to send Auntie DMS your questions, concerns or stories for publishing!!
Dishing with Auntie DMS ~ The ABC’s of Professional Behavior
It’s Auntie DMS with the ABC’s of professional behavior in the office setting! As we all attend to the office on a daily basis it can certainly be easy to feel as if Deloitte is your home away from home. And while it’s simply fabulous that we all feel such a lovely sense of comfort and ease in the work place, it should be top priority to all of us to remain, above all else, true professionals during the course of our working hours.
Active Listening: we give full attention to our internal and external clients in order that we get the job done right the first time! When and if in doubt, ask questions!
Appropriate Conduct: we model our behavior in accordance with the esteemed professional staff we serve as ICS
Accountability: we accept responsibility for our errors as readily as we do our successes
Build the relationship: we network with our team as much as possible to gain trust and build rapport
Bite your tongue: we filter inappropriate comments and save them for a dish with the girls (or boys!) outside of office hours.
Balance personal & professional image: yes, Auntie DMS is aware that we all have our individual flare when it comes to wardrobe and decorating our work stations. Ask yourself, is this office appropriate (and be honest to yourself when responding!)
Courtesy: is an explanation really necessary darlings? Remember the golden rule, we speak to others the way we chose to be spoken to (please refer to “Bite your tongue” above for clarification…..)
Communication: we speak in a professional manner through all media, voice, email, paper…..
Calm: we conduct ourselves with calm assurance no matter what may be happening around us. We focus on the job at hand, ask for help when necessary, and reassure ourselves that we are more than capable of processing our diverse and sometimes hectic workloads!
Hoping you all are having the best summer ever!
